Check our our amazing Energy Education Program! Hard to believe that another school year is getting ready to begin! During this time of the year, there seems to be a buzz in the air as kids get ready for another exciting year of learning, can you feel it? As teachers are preparing their classrooms, the Alliance would like to take this time to inform parents, teachers, and students alike, about our AMAZING Energy Education Program!
Our education program focuses on teaching young students about different energy sources and conservation. The main objective of our program is to introduce the concepts of clean vs. dirty and renewable vs. non-renewable energy sources, and to instill a sense of why energy conservation is important for all of our futures. To achieve our objective, our Energy Education Coordinator, John Bennett, brings in fun, interactive, hands-on activities to classrooms to get young students excited about science. For our workshop, our interns helped us build a stationary bicycle that can generate electricity. Using the energy bike, students experience the effort that goes into powering different types of light bulbs and appliances. The bike generator works the same way as a wind turbine—using mechanical energy to spin a magnet and create electricity. The energy bike allows students to delve in to this concept and understand experientially how energy production works. As popular as the bike generator has been with students, the Alliance also offers a “Kid Wind” wind turbine experiment kit that gives students the chance to learn about the science behind an actual clean energy resource. Possible experiments range from determining the most effective blade designs for wind-powered electricity generation to more general lessons about electricity, voltage, current, and resistance. Other experiments can be developed based on teacher input and classroom needs. Additionally, the Alliance offers the Light Switch Art Project for our younger students to help remind them to TURN THOSE LIGHTS OFF!! If you, or anyone you know, is interested in having the Alliance come into your classroom, feel free to call our office at 504-208-9761, or email Energy Education Coordinator, John Bennett, at john@all4energy.org! Let’s get the school year off to a great start by having kids learn about the importance of energy conservation!!
