The oil and gas leasing required by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) as a condition for renewable energy leases will continue to place the Gulf of Mexico as a climate sacrifice zone, leaving Gulf frontline communities vulnerable.

The Deepwater Horizon’s 2010 catastrophic oil spill is a painful reminder of the financial, social, and environmental impacts of offshore fossil fuel production. Provisions of the IRA that encourage more industrial development will place increased pollution burdens on the backs of southern communities already suffering the harms of pollution, even as Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says we need to stop expanding fossil infrastructure. The Gulf South must be spared from such a high climate burden.

After weeks of debate, St. James Parish officials adopted a temporary halt on new large solar complexes in the parish to take a closer look a rules for the land-intensive operations.

The St. James Parish Council voted 6-1 for the moratorium despite pleas from the backer of a 3,900-acre solar project in Vacherie that has rankled neighbors.

Entergy Louisiana's top executive urged the council not to approve the moratorium because of the poor signal it would send to investors. Environmental and community groups also opposed the measure as backward looking that would end up leaving the parish behind.

Regulators, including the Louisiana Public Service Commission, New Orleans City Council, and the Commission in Arkansas filed a suit with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) last year, which demonstrates a history of failures that together have resulted in ratepayers being saddled with $1 Billion in unreasonable and excessive costs. The Alliance, together with the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice and Sierra Club are also parties to this suit.

Grand Gulf Nuclear Plant has now been offline for more than three weeks.

For years, utility giant resisted diversifying its fuel sources, critics say

With Louisiana residents receiving unprecedentedly high electricity bills, Democrats on the Louisiana Public Service Commission last week blamed Entergy Louisiana for the “mess,” saying the utility giant ignored calls to diversify its sources of fuel for power generation.

While some commissioners blamed Entergy for the problem, one advocate said the commission also bears responsibility. Logan Burke, executive director of the Alliance for Affordable Energy, said the commission never really pushed hard for renewables. The energy industry knew years ago that renewables were going to become the cheapest sources of power, yet the commission over the course of four years approved four new natural gas power plants in Louisiana, Burke said.

Just New Orleans Is Not Enough; Groups Call for Statewide Shut-Off Moratorium

On August 4th the New Orleans City Council passed a resolution instituting a shut-off moratorium, directing Entergy New Orleans to suspend service disconnects for nonpayment until November 1, 2022.

While The Alliance is pleased by last weeks vote of the New Orleans City Council making the 90-day moratorium legally binding in New Orleans, supporters say it’s not enough. The Alliance and the Energy Efficiency for All Louisiana Coalition is calling on the Louisiana Public Service Commission to require all electric utilities to enact a statewide shut-off moratorium.

Years of bad faith and deceptive practices from Entergy have led us to this precarious moment where we are experiencing a combination of dangerously high temperatures and unaffordable high energy bills.

The Mayor's Office of Housing Policy and Community Development will host a community-based outreach event to provide financial assistance to eligible renters who are at risk of electric or water disconnection.

The event will take place on Wednesday, August 3 and Thursday, August 4 from 9am - 3 pm at the Joe Brown Park Recreational Center located at 5601 Read Blvd. Translators and legal assistance will be available onsite.

Am I eligable?
Residents who have applied for rental assistance through the City of New Orleans but have not received utility assistance can attend the outreach event.

Chants of ‘No more shutoffs, no more hikes, we deserve AC and lights’

Angry Entergy customers gathered outside the company’s headquarters in New Orleans to call for change as bills skyrocket and many across the state struggle with impending service shutoffs.

“I hope they see that people are not going to take it anymore, that we’re standing up and demanding that our regulators act on behalf of ratepayers to protect their best interests and to protect the most vulnerable among us,” said Jesse George of the Alliance for Affordable Energy.
