Entergy New Orleans is Planning on Upgrading its Electric Power Transmission System This summer, Entergy New Orleans is beginning a $30 million upgrade to its electric power transmission system. Transmission are the part of the system that look like giant metal robots (see photo). This project is very much needed to ensure continued reliable and affordable power for New Orleans.
Project Specifics This upgrade will replace existing transmission lines with much better ones – 3M aluminum conductor high-voltage wire (that’s the good stuff!). These lines are like a super highway for electricity. Plus, they are more energy efficient which means that less electricity gets lost on its way to your house. The project will consist of two phases. The first, beginning in July, involves replacing the transmission lines between the Ninemile generating plant and the Napoleon substation (opposite the Tchoup Rouses and Tip’s) to improve reliability and efficiency. This may affect the Audubon Park, upper Magazine Street and Annunciation Street areas. The second phase will begin in October and affect the Carrollton-Hollygrove area. Do You Find This Information As Exciting As We Do? Then embrace the inner geek and come to one of two (or both!) forums that Entergy is hosting. This is your opportunity to come out and learn more about the future of New Orleans’ power transmission system. 1. Wednesday, June 3, from 6-7:30. Audubon Tea House (6500 Magazine St.) 2. Thursday, June 4, from 6-7:30. NORDC Lyons Recreation Center (624 Louisiana Ave.)

That's interesting that they are upgrading the power transmissions to have an aluminum conductor high-voltage wire that can make less electricity get lost on the way to a house. Upgrading small parts like the wire is smart if it makes electricity more efficient so it provides more to consumers. It'd be smart if all power transmissions were upgraded the same way so more people could receive electricity easier and quicker.
