The Alliance for Affordable Energy is seeking a full-time Research & Communications Manager to join our team.

We are currently looking for a mission-aligned energy policy and communications professional to coordinate and publish external communications. Prior experience in the environmental justice or utility advocacy space is a plus, but not required.

The Research and Communications Manager is responsible for ensuring that The Alliance’s work is known and accessible to the community online. This person is responsible for collaborating with our Community Engagement Manager to manage the organization’s communications calendar, partnering with staff to publish blogs, regulatory summaries, and a monthly newsletter, and conducting relevant research and remaining up to date on significant events and Alliance policy positions.

This role reports to the Director of Staff, collaborates closely with the entire Alliance team, and may supervise the work of assigned interns, fellows, and contractors.

Core activities include

Influence Communications Strategy to Support Policy Campaigns

  • Partner with the Community Engagement Manager to propose a content calendar.
  • Remain up to date on relevant news and issues AAE is engaged in
    • Monitor multiple google alerts for relevant articles to share
    • Identify and review articles for sharing to social
    • Attend policy and organizing team meetings

Influence AAE Policy Positions

  • Conduct research on related topics to support the development of and/or recommend policy positions.

External Communications Management

  • AAE Action Alerts & Blog – The Watchdog
    • Draft and/or edit blog posts to ensure the public is informed about Alliance priorities, emerging threats, and upcoming utility regulatory meetings, including but not limited to monthly LPSC B&E and CNO regular, utility, and climate committee meetings. 
    • Create graphics to accompany blog posts and the newsletter.
    • Email listserv about events and upcoming actions and how they can engage.
    • Publish blog posts to the AAE website.
  • Share out regulatory meeting updates
    • Live tweet monthly LPSC B&E meetings.
    • Provide timely updates of CNO meetings.
  • Monthly Newsletter 
    • Coordinate with staff to identify key issues to highlight.
    • Publish AAE’s monthly newsletter.

Media Outreach

  • Steward press relationships to ensure they see AAE as a resource and seek opportunities to expand our connections
    • Contribute to AAE’s media contacts list.
    • Build relationships with national and local media outlets.
  • Monitor AAE email for press requests and facilitate interview scheduling
    • Track press requests
  • Draft and edit press releases (with support from relevant team members)
  • Disseminate press releases to the AAE media list and facilitate follow-up.
  • Coordinate Ad buys

Who You Are

Education and Experience Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced education/experience in a related field (ex. environmental science, energy, sustainability, communications, journalism) preferred.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working in communications, preferably in a mission-driven non-profit environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing effective communications strategies.
  • Familiarity with energy policy, environmental justice and the Louisiana energy landscape.

Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to make technical and complex topics digestible to a broad audience.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a mission-driven team.
  • Passion for progressive energy solutions, environmental justice, civil rights, social justice, and climate action. Curiosity fueled research experience in these topic areas.
  • Proficiency with digital platforms such as Mailchimp, Monday.com, Linktree, Bonterra or comparable tools.
  • Experience working with local and national press and media outlets.
  • Ability to work with communities and professionals that are different from you in culture, ethnicity, political viewpoints, age, economic situation, or other difference.
  • Ability to produce written work product without the use of AI tools.
  • Flexible and adaptable; open to feedback and continued growth.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office & Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom. Other software knowledge is a plus.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Compassion for others.

  • Have exemplary prioritization and time management skills – able to switch gears, handle interruptions, and refocus back on planned work while meeting all deadlines.

  • Ability to leverage partnerships and volunteers to maximize impact.
  • Established relationships within Louisiana communities.
  • Fluency in a language other than English (ideally Spanish, French, French Creole, or Vietnamese).
Location

Hybrid. Remote possible, residing in Louisiana preferred.

Compensation

$60,000 – $80,000 (evaluated based upon relevant prior experience)
