Democracy & Elections

Every couple of years, at least one of the five seats at the Louisiana Public Service Commission is up for election.

Despite taking action on questions worth billions of dollars that impacts every person in the state, the constitutionally empowered agency rarely gets the attention it deserves. This year, District 2 is on the ballot. District 2 includes much of Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and down the bayou in Houma. For the last 8 years Commissioner Craig Greene, has represented the district. Commissioner Greene’s office has prioritized reliability, resilience, and better access to renewable energy, in particular for large industrial customers. Commissioner Greene’s announcement that he is not seeking re-election, has opened the field wide to all newcomers who might throw their hat into the ring before July 19th (deadline for qualifying for the election this fall).

As always, The Alliance will host candidate forums to give voters an opportunity to hear from folks who want to wade into energy regulation, representing District 2. We will also ramp up other kinds of voter education, partnering with allies who will be working on get out the vote efforts. It’s been 8 years since District 2 has voted on a Commissioner (CM Greene ran un-contested 6 years ago) so we want to be sure voters are well informed.

The Alliance does not make recommendations or support candidates for office, but we hope to shine a light on this election so voters know what the LPSC is all about. We’ll be releasing a list of our priority issues for this district in advance of our forums, and in the meantime, please let us know HERE what you want to know from a candidate for the Commission.

Finally, we need help! When elections come around, we like to bring someone on to The Alliance team from the district that is up for grabs to help us get the word out. We’re hiring now*, so take a look and see if you fit the bill.

*UPDATE: Our LPSC Education Coordinator Position has been filled. Thank you for your interest!
