The first public meeting of Entergy New Orleans’ 2027 Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) cycle is Wednesday, November 11 at 10am at City Hall.

ENO and the Council’s utility advisors will present on the timeline and goals of the IRP process and  will be receiving public comments on Utility Docket UD-26-02. Every 3 years, ENO is obligated to engage the public in planning the city’s energy future. By voicing your concerns publicly, you could impact how energy is produced in your community and at what cost it may come.

What’s the deal with IRPs?

IRP is a process through which ENO, the Council, and community stakeholders decide how New Orleans will get the electricity it needs in the future, whether through dirty, expensive fossil fuels, or clean, affordable renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The outcome of this planning process will affect your utility bills, the environment, and preparedness for extreme weather.

What is the CNO?

In New Orleans, the City Council (CNO) regulates our utilities: Entergy New Orleans and Delta Utilities. These utilities are monopolies, which means that regulation is important because they don’t have market competition to otherwise ensure the best price for consumers.

The CNO makes decisions that directly impact how much you pay, whether your lights stay on, and how much utility companies profit. These decisions about whether to approve a utility company’s request for a rate increase or how much money is spent on maintenance to keep the grid reliable happen at the CNO’s monthly meetings.

For years, New Orleanians have faced rising energy costs and declining service. The CNO has the power to hold monopoly utilities accountable. When the Council fails to act, or acts in the interest of corporations instead of people, we as consumers pay the price. That’s why your input and perspective are so important.

Whether you are concerned about the cost-of-living, economic opportunities like renewables, climate change and the environment, or the power of monopolies in state politics, the CNO is incredibly important.

As your advocate, The Alliance regularly participates in CNO meetings and proceedings to help amplify community voices and advocate for an affordable, equitable, environmentally responsible energy system.
