There are two upcoming New Orleans City Government meetings you should know about.

First, the New Orleans City Council (CNO) Climate Committee is meeting next Tuesday, October 13 at 10am at City Hall.
Later, the New Orleans City Planning Commission (CPC) is meeting the same day at 1:30pm.

The CPC is expected to discuss rules governing how the city defines and zones data centers (i.e the size and scale of certain types of data centers). During a meeting in August, the CPC solicited feedback regarding a set of proposed guidelines. Instead of approving them as they were at the time, the CPC will now revisit the issue.

If you can’t make the meeting in person, you can join the CNO livestream from The Council’s YouTube and the CPC livestream from the Planning Commission’s website.

The Alliance encourages you to attend both meetings if you’re able and provide your input by submitting a comment in-person or online on agenda items that matter to you.

The Climate Committee’s meeting agenda and online comment link will be published to the Council’s website about 24hours before the meeting. Please note the online comment portal will close 2 hours before the start of the meeting at 8am on October 13.

The City Planning Commission’s agenda has been posted, though it may be updated before the meeting. The online and written comment period is open: you may submit  comments to the Executive Director in advance by mail (1300 Perdido Street, 7th floor, New Orleans LA 70112) or email (CPCinfo@nola.gov). All written comments must be received by 5 pm on October 5, the Monday eight days before the meeting.

Why are CNO Meetings Important?

In New Orleans, the City Council (CNO) regulates our utilities: Entergy New Orleans and Delta Utilities. These utilities are monopolies, which means that regulation is important because they don’t have market competition to otherwise ensure the best price for consumers.

The CNO makes decisions about how much you pay, whether your lights stay on, and how much utility companies profit. These decisions about whether to approve a utility company’s request for a rate increase or how much money is spent on maintenance to keep the grid reliable happen at the CNO’s monthly meetings.

For years, New Orleanians have faced rising energy costs and declining service. The CNO has the power to hold monopoly utilities accountable. When the Council fails to act, or acts in the interest of corporations instead of people, we as consumers pay the price. That’s why your input and perspective are so important.

Whether you are concerned about the cost-of-living, economic opportunities like renewables, climate change and the environment, or the power of monopolies in state politics, the CNO is incredibly important.

As your advocate, The Alliance regularly participates in CNO meetings and proceedings to help amplify community voices and advocate for an affordable, equitable, environmentally responsible energy system.
