In New Orleans, the City Council (CNO) regulates our utilities: Entergy New Orleans and Delta Utilities. These utilities are monopolies, which means that regulation is important because they don’t have market competition to otherwise ensure the best price for consumers. 

The CNO makes decisions about how much you pay, whether your lights stay on, and how much utility companies profit. These decisions about whether to approve a utility company’s request for a rate increase or how much money is spent on maintenance to keep the grid reliable happen at the CNO’s monthly meetings. 

For years, New Orleanians have faced rising energy costs and declining service. The CNO has the power to hold monopoly utilities accountable. When the Council fails to act, or acts in the interest of corporations instead of people, we as consumers pay the price. That’s why your input and perspective are so important.

Whether you are concerned about the cost-of-living, economic opportunities like renewables, climate change and the environment, or the power of monopolies in state politics, the CNO is incredibly important. 

As your advocate, The Alliance regularly participates in CNO meetings and proceedings to help amplify community voices and advocate for an affordable, equitable, environmentally responsible energy system.
