Electric and gas bills are rising across Louisiana and for many households the increases are hard to understand and even harder to afford.

This April, the Alliance for Affordable Energy is hosting two Community Bill Workshops to help residents make sense of what we’re paying and why.

Metairie
Tuesday, April 7 from 6pm – 7:30pm
Jefferson East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W Napoleon Ave

Shreveport
Thursday, April 9 from 6pm – 7:30pm
Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, 5340 Jewella Avenue

Bring your gas and electric bills — and your questions — to our community bill workshop.

At the workshop we’ll:

  1. Walk through the charges on your bill and what they’re for
  2. Talk about why costs keep going up
  3. Direct you to the people in charge of setting rates

That last one’s easy – for most of us outside of New Orleans, it’s the Louisiana Public Service Commission that sets rates – a 5-member elected body. Two of the PSC seats are up for election this year with primaries in May and the general election in November. If you live in Southeast LA or North LA, you’ll be voting in these elections. Voting is free. Your utilities aren’t!

While monopoly utilities with no competition protect their bottom lines and shareholder returns, The Alliance looks out for Louisiana residents and businesses to ensure you only pay your fair share. Understanding your bill is one of the first steps toward accountability.

Limited bill assistance will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Whether you’re struggling with high bills or just want to better understand where your money is going, these workshops offer a chance to get clear answers and real support.
