In 1985, a small group of Louisianans decided the people paying the light bill deserved a seat at the table where utility decisions get made. Forty years later, that’s still the job. We’ve shown up at countless meetings and dockets on behalf of the people of Louisiana. Our arguments have remained consistent: lower energy costs and lower pollution aren’t in conflict, good jobs and smart regulation can coexist, and that the public interest matters as much as a reasonable profit. It’s added up: more than $4 billion in direct savings for Louisiana ratepayers since our founding. We’ve fought back when utilities ask for rate hikes, when they slow-walk cheaper clean energy, and when trillion-dollar Big Tech companies try to make Louisianans subsidize the costs to power their private data centers.
Though the details of the fights ahead may look different than the ones in 1985, our mission hasn’t changed. Louisiana has an opportunity to transform from an energy state to a clean energy leader, but that transition must be built by and for the people who live here, not just the companies that profit here. Our 40th year isn’t a lap of honor. It’s a launchpad for the next chapter: holding the line on affordability, pushing for a smarter grid, and making sure every Louisianan has a real voice in the decisions that show up on their bill.
We’re marking 40 years of service in the best way we know how: out loud, in public, and with the community that’s made this work possible. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing the stories, the people, and the wins that got us here, building up to a celebration this fall that’s part reunion, part rally, and part party.
