Professor Sherwood Rowland was a scientist, particularly renowned for his contribution to raising awareness of the dangers of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). His work in this field began in the early 1970s and in 1974 he and his research partner Mario Molino presented their findings. In Rowland’s own words:
“Mario and I realised this was not just a scientific question, but a potentially grave environmental problem involving substantial depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer… Entire biological systems, including humans, would be at danger from ultra-violet rays.”
Professor Sherwood’s final paper (his 425th) centered around the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He was analyzing the impact of the oil and the dispersants that were used to break it down.
