UPDATE: THIS MEETING HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO NOVEMBER 6, 2023.
The Louisiana Legislature has convened a Task Force to examine the local impacts of carbon capture & sequestration (CCS).

Where: Capitol (900 North Third Street), Room E
When: Tuesday, October 24th, 12:30 pm

The Alliance encourages those who can to attend the meeting and give testimony. Persons who do not feel comfortable giving testimony in person may submit a prepared statement via email to snatr@legis.la.gov. Make sure to email your statement in at least 4 hours before the meeting. The Task Force will submit a final report on or before February 15, 2024.

The Alliance’s thoughts on CCS:

Carbon capture & sequestration (CCS) is not a climate solution; it is a dangerous, expensive, and unproven technology. Real solutions for climate change do exist, supported by LA communities. Our leaders should focus on strategies that maximize public benefit and ensure a stable and safe economic future for Louisiana and its people. Carbon capture does not fit that bill.

It’s not just The Alliance that has concerns about CCS. On August 1, 2023 thirty-nine Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), sent a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan. In that letter, the GOP senators voiced concern that carbon capture and sequestration technologies “are still nascent and have not yet been adequately demonstrated.”

Recently the Biden-appointed White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council (WHEJAC) released their report recommending we halt ALL CCS buildouts, citing their risks to public and environmental health, their unclear and inaccessible information, and proven ineffectiveness. WHEJAC instead recommended that the administration should “prioritize technologies that immediately reduce dependency on fossil fuel sources of energy and immediately stop environmental injustices.”
