(New Orleans, LA) –Today, the Alliance for Affordable Energy, Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, Inc., and Sierra Club filed an objection to Entergy’s request for a decision on its latest gas power plant application without public input nor independent analysis.  The filing requests adequate time for public review and input by New Orleans residents who will be asked to pay for the gas power plant and bear the burdens of its environmental impact.

Sierra CLub- ENTERGY’S LATEST REQUEST TO BUILD GAS PLANT IN CONFLICT WITH MAYOR’S CLIMATE ACTION STRATEGY

7/10/2017

(New Orleans, LA) – Yesterday, Entergy New Orleans submitted its latest proposal to build a gas power plant in New Orleans East despite ongoing opposition from residents, businesses and organizations. Today, the Alliance for Affordable Energy, Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, and the Sierra Club commend Mayor Mitch Landrieu for developing a Climate Action Strategy for the City of New Orleans. The Mayor’s ‘Climate Action for a Resilient New Orleans’ calls for 255 megawatts of locally generated solar energy by 2030 and promotes a transition to 100% "low-carbon power."

The Mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, today presented a Climate Action Plan, a roadmap for the city to reduce its carbon pollution 50% by 2030. The Mayor’s Plan is realistic and actionable, describing specific measures needed in electricity, transportation, waste, and water to prepare the city to grow and thrive into the future.
Mayor Landrieu is also the new President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. His Plan shows that cities can shape their future, rather than wait passively for worst-case scenarios to materialize.

Times-Picayune- Entergy gives City Council two options for Michoud power plant -- but it really wants one

"Building a gas power plant is not only in conflict with the City's climate action strategy, it would also put all New Orleans ratepayers on the hook for more than $200 million in construction costs alone and create serious environmental concerns for residents in New Orleans East," Burke said. "Across the country, efficient and renewable energy systems are proving to be cheaper and more resilient than pollution emitting fossil fuels."
