Weatherstripping and Caulking
ISSUE:
Air sealing is one of the easiest, most cost effective ways of making energy efficiency improvements to your home, significantly reducing your heating and cooling costs. Weatherstripping is used to seal moveable components (like doors, windows, and attic accesses) with foam, vinyl, metal, and rubber. Caulking forms a flexible, more permanent seal for cracks, gaps, or joints less than 1/4” wide, such as around vents, switchplates, plumbing fixtures, door/window frames and any other gaps where air might infiltrate the building envelope. For gaps larger than that, look for polyurethane spray foam, like GreatStuff, which expands to seal bigger openings. These simple measures can reduce your energy costs and increase your home’s comfort, durability and value. The improvements will pay for itself in no time.
