Water Efficient Toilets

ISSUE:
OLD TOILETS WASTE WATER. Toilets account for approximately 30% of residential indoor water consumption. Toilets are a major source of wasted water due to leaks and/or inefficiency.

PRODUCT:

WATERSENSE TOILETS. WaterSense, a program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is helping consumers to identify high-performance, water-efficient toilets that can reduce water use in the home. Under federal law, toilets must not exceed 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf). High-efficiency toilets (HETs) go beyond the standard and use less than 1.3 gpf. Unlike first generation "low-flow" toilets, WaterSense labeled HETs combine high efficiency with high performance. Design advances enable WaterSense labeled HETs to save water with no trade-off in flushing power. In fact, many perform better than standard toilets in consumer testing.

DUAL FLUSH TOILETS. Dual flush toilets are a variation of the flush toilet that uses two
buttons or handles to flush different levels of water. These toilets have two different settings, usually 0.8 gallons for liquid removal and 1.6 gallons for full flush solid removal. Due to the more complex mechanism, it is more expensive than many other types of low-flow
toilets. It has been proven to save up to 67% of water usage in most homes.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

WATER SAVINGS. If every home in the United States replaced one old toilet with a new HET, more than 900 billion gallons of water would be saved annually. Not only do HETs and dual flush toilets help conserve water resources, they help you save on water bills. A family of four can save $90 each year by replacing an old toilet with an HET.
