Sealing Penetrations in Ceiling

ISSUE:
Recessed can lights, ceiling fans and HVAC vents can create uninsulated penetrations in the ceiling, where heat can transfer in and out of the attic. It allows your air conditioning to escape during the summer and pulls warm air out of living spaces during the winter. Also, air leaks will cancel out the effectiveness of existing insulation in an attic. Your home becomes less energy efficient, costing you more in energy bills. Insulate around recessed can lights and caulk around cracks around ceiling fans and vents. Though locating and sealing gaps in the ceiling may be tricky to do, it is one of the most important steps you can take in reducing air leakage and minimizing moisture damage to the attic.
It is recommended that you contact a professional to help you insulate recessed can lights, because it needs adequate air space around it to vent the heat it creates.
