Fiberglass Insulation

ISSUE:
Sometimes called "the pink stuff", this type of insulation is made from glass fibers finely woven together. It can come in a loose form (to be blown-in), but is typically used as blankets (to be cut to fit) between studs, joists and beams. There is a potential health risk associated with the fine glass fibers becoming loose during installation or rebuilding. Fiberglass is has been found by the American Lung Association to be a “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” because loose fibers can accidentally be inhaled. It can also contain formaldehyde-based binders. Wear proper protective gear when handling fiberglass insulation.  Many manufacturers today are incorporating recycled materials into their fiberglass products, which is certified by environmental groups for increasing air quality with lower emissions of formaldehyde and other pollutants. Fiberglass has an R-value 11-15 for typical 3.5” thick insulation. High density types can have up to R-value 38 for a 12” thickness.
