Attic Stair Cover
ISSUE:
Installing an insulating cover over your attic stairs can be an easy way to create a barrier between the potentially extreme temperatures of your unconditioned attic space from the comfortable temperature of your living space. There are a few types of insulating attic stair coverings available to homeowners. One is the Attic Tent® from Insul-Sure, a durable insulating shell that covers cracks around the opening of the attic stairs to prevent air leaks. The Attic Tent is lightweight, durable and requires no assembly It is simply installed by stapling or gluing it to the wood frame of the stairs and caulking around the edges. Once installed, simply unzip to access the attic. The attic tent has an R-value of 3.2, which may not be insulating enough for uninsulated attics, and it can be more expensive than other types of stair covers. Another type of attic stair covering is a molded dome made of rigid insulating foam, which can attach magnetically. Attic stair covers can be customized to fit houses with folding attic stairs, an attic kneehole, and attic scuttle holes. Attic stair covers keep air, dust and insulation from entering the conditioned space, improving indoor air quality. Low cost, simple DIY plans are available on-line at the D.O.E.'s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy website.
