Take action to make renewable energy a reality for Louisiana
March 4 - Thanks to odd weather and cancelled meetings, the procedural schedule for the renewable portfolio standard (RPS) docket has been extended. We now have more time to let the Louisiana Public Service Commission know that the current policy proposal is unacceptable and that our state needs real policies to encourage renewable energy production. Call or write your commissioner today and tell him that we need a strong, binding renewable portfolio standard to create jobs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and keep our energy dollars local.
Due to the cancellation of the February Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) meeting, commissioners will now review staff's policy proposal at the March 10 LPSC meeting in Baton Rouge. This has also pushed back the vote on the policy, which will likely be voted on at the May LPSC meeting.
This delay allows more time for the public to comment on LPSC staff's policy proposal for the renewable portfolio standard. The Alliance finds this proposal unacceptable for three main reasons: 1. it is non-binding, 2. the targets are very weak (12.5% by 2015) and 3. it includes nuclear and “advanced coal technologies”.
In order to encourage renewable energy development and give investors the assurances they need to invest in renewable energy projects, it is essential that we have a binding RPS. A “goals-based” RPS will do nothing to encourage renewable energy production in our state.
Furthermore, all of the economic modelling explored in the RPS process was based upon a mandatory RPS with goals similar to the Waxman-Markey bill in the US Congress – 20% by 2020. 12.5% is a very weak target, particularly as Louisiana already gets 3.7% of our power from renewable sources. In order to build renewable energy industries and reap the benefits of job creation and economic development for our state, we need higher targets.
And finally, nuclear and “advanced coal technologies” are dirty, unsafe, and simply not renewable. They have no place in a policy designed to encourage renewable energy production.
Call or write your public service commissioner today and tell them that we need a strong, binding RPS that does not include nuclear or advanced coal technologies.
