Clean Energy Now! Bus Tour comes to New Orleans

February 18 - Today the Hip Hop Caucus and Repower America brought the Clean Energy Now! Bus Tour to Dillard University, where more than 100 students packed the school's quad to dance and listen to speakers. Hip Hop Caucus President and CEO Reverend Lennox Yearwood Jr. opened the event, speaking passionately about the need for a shift to clean energy to fight both poverty and pollution.

Students dancing in the Dillard quadReverend Yearwood put the issues in stark terms. “In the 20th century we fought for equality. In the 21st century we are fighting for existence,” said the reverend. He also emphasized the importance of meeting in New Orleans at Dillard University. “If you can overcome what you overcame,” he said, “then we can do anything.”

Speakers included Dr. Beverly Wright, Director of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, Gloria Reuben, TV Star from ER and Law & Order: SVU, D Woods, Hip Hop and R & B star from MTV’s Making the Band, LeToya Luckett, R & B singer/songwriter and actress. Music was provided by Biz Markie and the Rebirth Brass Band.
